Ambrose Nix, killed in shootout with police, Oklahoma, 1934



On October 24, 1934 Ambrose Nix of Sardis, Pushmataha Co, OK broke out of the Holdenville, Hughes County jail while being held on robbery charges. A string of robberies and the kidnapping of two police officers in Paris, TX followed. Nix was later surrounded at a farmhouse near Okemah in Okfuskee County on December 23rd, 1934 when police went there looking for the suspects who participated in 3 local simultaneious bank robberies the previous day. Ambrose Nix fired on the police when they arrived, and he was killed in the shootout that followed. Nix's partner and fellow prison escapee Arthur Gooch, was captured at the farmhouse and prosecuted for the kidnapping and robbery of two policemen in Paris, TX. He was tried, convicted, and executed.
