Biography of Daniel Nix

Son of Jennings Nix. Joined Company "C" of the 28th Alabama on the same day as his brother Tyre (Tyree) at Murphree's Crossroads. They arrived at Shilo in April just after the battle was over.

Nix, Daniel, (2nd Junior Lieutenant) Enlisted at Murphree's Crossroads, Blount County, Alabama, 6 Feburary 1862; and appointed 2nd Junior Lieutenant on that date. Reenlisted for duration of war at Dalton, Georgia 23 Jan 1864. P.O.W. at Resaca, Georgia 16 May 1864. Discharged from Military Prison, Alton, Illinois 24 May 1865... and note that he "Wishes transportation to Guntersville, Alabama on Tennessee River."

Married first to Elizabeth Ann ___. She was born 20 May 1826 and died 3 Jun 1893. She is buried at Moody's Chapel Cemetery in Etowah Co, AL. After her death, Daniel Married second to Nancy Turner (daughter of Confederate Veteran John Turner) on 14 May 1895 in Etowah Co, AL. She stated her husband died 14 Jan 1912 in her Confederate widow's pension application. Her application was approved. His grave marker in Moody's Chapel Cemetery shows his birth date was 7 Feb 1827. Nancy L. Turner Nix was born 1 Apr 1849, according to her tombstone and widow's pension papers, but her gravemarker does not record her date of death.

Daniel Nix obituary... "The Southern Democrat" 18 Jan 1912... Daniel Nix Passes Away. Daniel Nix, one of the old pioneer citizens of North Alabama, died at his home near Altoona, last Saturday night. Mr. Nix was 92 years of age and was one of the first settlers of this section. He was a man who was loved by all who knew him. He was the grandfather of Mrs. J.M. Harris of this place.

Daniel Nix obituary... "The Blount County Journal" 19 Jan 1912... Daniel Nix Passes Away Daniel Nix died at his home on route 1, Altoona, on last Sunday morning. Old age and a complication of diseases caused his death. Mr. Nix, who had been a resident of the county for the past sixty years, was a highly esteemed citizen and had the respect of all. He was a consecrated member of the Primitive Baptist church. The funeral service was conducted Sunday by Rev. John Phillips, and interment was made at Moody's Chapel. Mr. Nix was a grandfather of Mesdames J.M. Harris and Myla Richardson, of Oneonta, who in company with Mr. Harris, attended the funeral.
