Sunday, April 10, 1887 ... Deputy Fields and Deputy Crowder Nix had a warrant for James H. “Jim” Cunnicus
for stealing 800 pounds of flour from a railroad car. The deputies proceeded to a camp near Eufaula where
Cunnicus was believed to be hiding. As they rode up to the camp, Deputy Fields recognized
Cunnicus and advised him he had a warrant for his arrest. Cunnicus grabbed a shotgun from his
saddle and fired both barrels into the deputy, killing him. Nix arrested Cunnicus after wounding him in both legs.
