and later immigrated to the US in the 1870s.

So far only one Nix family from this part of Ireland has been DNA tested.
Here is some information
to help interpret this family's DNA results.
The Y-DNA test results showed that their Y-DNA ancient haplogroup was R1b1c. Family Tree DNA describes the haplogroup briefly:
Haplogroup R1b is the most common haplogroup in European populations. It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial
maximum 10-12 thousand years ago.
Here are some webpages with additional information about Haplogroup R1B.
Dennis Garvey's website contains a lot of information about
some of the subgroups of haplogroup R1b.
Whit Athey's analysis of the allele
frequencies found within haplogroup R1b is also very interesting.
Their haplotype results matched that of 6 individuals in yhrd.org's
Y-DNA database of 16,953 different haplotypes. This database is anonymous and worldwide, but it mainly focuses on continental Europe. There seem to be relatively few
participants in this database from the British Isles and Ireland.
The matches to the Nix testees haplotype results were as follows:
1 match in Denmark & 1 match in Pyrennes, Spain & a surprising 4 matches in Lunca de Sus, Romania [Csángó]
Their haplotype results were compared with ysearch.org's
database of 38,113 mainly American and English testees. The results were as follows:
22.68% of the people in the database were also members of Haplogroup R1b. However, only 21 other individuals
with known ancestral origins were
a direct match to the Nix testee's specific Y-DNA markers. These matches were as follows:
3 matches from Ireland & 2 matches from Killarney, Ireland & 1 match from Tipperary, Ireland & 1 match from
Wexford, Ireland & 1 match from Northern Ireland & 1 match
from Angus, Scotland & 1 match in Derbyshire, England & 1 match in
London, England &
1 match in Staffordshire, England & 1 match in New South Wales, Australia & 8 matches in various US states.
This Nix family's haplotype results matched that of 28 individuals of known origins in Family Tree DNA's
private anonymous database of Recent Ancestral Origins. The matches to the testee were from the following countries:10 matches
from England/UK/Great Britain. 10 matches from Ireland. 1 match from Northern Ireland. 1 match from France. 1 match from Germany. 1 match from Greece. 2 matches from Scotland. 2 matches from Wales.
